   Cowandilla Primary School

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP)

Cowandilla prides itself on being part of the International Baccalaureate Programme. As an IB World School we work together with a cluster of other local schools to form what is called the ‘Bright Futures Cluster’. The other schools in this cluster are Torrensville Primary, Kidman Park Primary, and Underdale High School.

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) is conducted from year 6 through to year 10. Year 1 of the IBMYP is started in Year 6, year 2 of the IBMYP coincides with year 7 and so on until completion in year 10 (IBMYP year 5).

Our delivery of the IBMYP ensures that all students become active global citizens.

The IBMYP is a curriculum and philosophy with principles that are deeply rooted in international education and international-mindedness that covers all subject areas :
  • Language A (English)
  • Language B (Language other than English)
  • Science
  • Humanities
  • The Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Technology
  • Physical education

Central to this program is what is called the IB Learner Profile, through which we aim to develop students who are: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Caring, Risk-takers, Balanced and Reflective.

Through the IB program we deliver interdisciplinary inquiry based teaching programs that focus on the fundamental concepts of Holistic learning, Intercultural awareness and Communication. We are committed to providing a broad and balanced educational experience that educates the whole child while understanding and respecting all cultures and valuing multiple forms of expression.

All subject areas are taught through the 5 areas of interaction. These could also be described as five broad areas of student inquiry and include:
  • Approaches to learning (ATL)
  • Community and Service
  • Health and Social Education
  • Environments
  • Human Ingenuity

Through the contexts provided by the Areas of Interaction students should become more aware of the relevance of their learning to real-world issues and come to see that knowledge, concepts, skills and attitudes are an interrelated whole.

A Personal project is formally assessed in the fifth year of the program but we provide students with the opportunity to complete a personal project in both year 6 (IBMYP year 1) and year 7 (IBMYP year 2). The personal project is a significant body of work completed over an extended period that is designed using the student’s own initiative and creativity.

Although the IBMYP is only officially taught in years 6&7 the philosophy and principles are taught from Reception right through to year 7. All classes work through the Areas of Interaction and the Learner profile.
